Tax & Accounting Manager
Murrieta, CA
$150k – $185k
Mixed Tax
Hybrid
An established CPA firm with over 40 years in business is building out an office in Southern California, and we're looking for a Tax & Accounting Manager to come in as one of the first hires on the ground. The firm works exclusively with high growth businesses, no individual-only tax clients, and every client is on a retainer. The person taking this role has real line of sight to grow into a leadership position as the office expands and the current lead moves into partnership.
The role
You'll own client relationships end to end rather than sitting in a siloed compliance function. That means full-cycle accounting work (bank recs, trial balance prep, financial reporting) alongside tax review and prep, plus being the primary point of contact for consulting and advisory conversations with clients. Work includes multi-state tax and exposure to more complex entrepreneurial issues such as asset and stock sales. The firm operates "soup to nuts," so at manager level you're still expected to jump into prep work when deadlines demand it, nobody here is too senior to do that.
What you will need
Around 5 to 7 years of progressive, review-based experience, ideally at supervisor or manager level
Recent, hands-on full-cycle accounting exposure, not just tax prep or review in a firm where accounting and tax are separate departments
Comfort as the primary client-facing contact on consulting and advisory work, not solely compliance
Multi-state tax experience
QBO and CCH Axcess proficiency preferred
A self-starter mentality, someone who takes ownership of client work without waiting to be told what to do
Background at a smaller, non-siloed firm is a strong plus
California state tax knowledge is a nice-to-have and can be trained
What is on offer
Hybrid schedule: after a 90-day onboarding period, in-office time drops to around two days a week, with more required only in the final two weeks before each tax deadline
Open to part-time arrangements for the right candidate
A small, non-hierarchical culture with working, accessible partners, not passive equity holders
High-value advisory and consulting work with business owners rather than commoditized compliance
Full autonomy over your own client relationships, with real potential to grow into a senior leadership role as the office builds out
Compensation open and will be structured around the right candidate rather than a fixed band
Commutable distance to the Southern California office is required. If this sounds like your kind of role, apply now or reach out to find out more.
