Tax Senior
San Rafael, CA
$130k – $170k
Mixed Tax
Hybrid
The firm
An established independent CPA firm north of the Golden Gate Bridge, around 30 staff, roughly 40 years in business. The firm has grown from about 20 to 30 people organically over the past few years and works across individual, business, nonprofit, trust and audit rather than siloing staff into one return type.
The role
You'll handle a mix of preparation and review across individual, business, nonprofit and trust returns, with the balance shifting toward more review as your experience grows. Busy season (February to April) runs 50 to 55 billable hours a week at its peak, dropping to a standard 40 hours the rest of the year. There is a genuine path toward manager and partner here based on performance and client relationships, not a fixed track. Two current partners never held the title of manager before making partner.
What you will need
Around 6 to 8 years of tax experience, comfortable moving between preparation and review
A stable work history. This firm is looking for someone building a career here, not a two year stopover
Willingness to talk directly to clients as your role grows
Lacerte experience is a plus. An existing or growing book of business is a plus, and any new business you bring in earns commission in perpetuity while that client stays with the firm.
What is on offer
Base salary $130,000 to $170,000 depending on experience, plus bonus and commission upside
Hybrid schedule, 2 days remote per week, non-consecutive and flexible week to week
One busy season a year, capped around 55 hours during the final weeks of tax season
Standard 40 hour weeks outside of February through April
Office closed every Friday in July
CPE, licensing and further tax education reimbursed
An informal, effort based route toward manager and partner, with a partner-level opening likely to open up in the coming years
